Trump says he's 'not happy' with Iran's new supreme leader choice

President Donald Trump said he is "not happy" with Iran's election of a new supreme leader, but that the early results of Operation Epic Fury have been "far beyond expectations." Mojtaba Khamenei, son of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been installed as the next supreme leader. "I don't think I can live in peace," Trump said in an interview with Fox News chief foreign correspondent Trey Yingst. TRUMP SAYS HE'S 'NOT HAPPY' WITH IRAN'S ELECTION OF NEW SUPREME LEADER The president touted what he described as the success of the joint military operation between the United States and Israel. "Way beyond expectations in terms of results this early," Trump told Fox News. More than 5,000 targets have been hit by the US military since the operation was launched on February 28, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Monday. "When we attacked them first, we shot down 50% of their missiles and if we didn't, it would have been a much harder fight," Trump said. He described the first blow as decisive and necessary. "No other president had the guts to do it... I don't want a president who doesn't have the courage in five or 10 years to go in. It's like a gunman, where he draws his gun first," Trump told Yingst. "If we had waited three days, I think they would have attacked us," he added. Trump described what he called an element of surprise in the timing of the operation. "Breakfast attacks are unusual and they were tricked because they thought we weren't going to go at that time and all that... And they just met. It was very, very surprising. And everyone got together and it was open," he said. "If they had a bomb, they would have used it in Israel and other parts of the Middle East," Trump said. "I think, and probably we, if they could have gotten her there, it would have been difficult." Trump said U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner told him that Iran claimed it had enough enriched uranium to build 11 nuclear bombs. "I said, you know, they're not playing that smart. Because they're basically saying I have to attack them. They should have just said, 'We're not going to build a nuclear missile,'" Trump said. "It's possible, it depends on the terms, possible, just possible... You know, in some ways we don't have to talk anymore, you know, if you really think about it, but it's possible," he told Fox News. Trump also said he was baffled by the fact that Iran attacked Gulf countries in response to US and Israeli attacks. "One of the things that surprised me the most was when they attacked countries that were not attacking them," he said. Iranian state media and UNICEF estimates put the death toll at between 165 and 180 people, most of them young schoolchildren, and dozens more were injured. The figures have not been independently verified. "It's just under investigation, but we're not the only ones who have that particular rocket," Trump said.
