Outages occur from time to time that affect air travel. In October, Alaska Airlines had to ground its planes for hours due to an information technology failure. Three months earlier, Alaska suspended all flights for about three hours after a critical piece of hardware failed at a data center. In August, a technological problem forced United Airlines to ground planes at major US airports and more than 1,000 flights were delayed. The system outage, as described by the company, lasted several hours. In 2024, Delta Air Lines struggled for several days to recover from a global technology outage caused by a faulty software update. The disruption also affected other airlines, hospitals and businesses around the world.
