Hilary Duff on Haylie Duff, Parents Estrangements

Hilary Duff's lips are not sealed when it comes to family dynamics. The How I Met Your Father alum candidly described her relationship with her parents, Bob Duff and Susan Duff, in relation to the lyrics of the song "The Optimist" from her new album Luck... or Something. "I think being very vulnerable and open about what it's like to be in a family where your parents aren't together and you don't have relationships with both parents," he said of the song's lyrical inspiration on the March 9 episode of the On Purpose With Jay Shetty podcast. "It's devastating. No matter how old you are, you want your parents to feel like they care about you. And for a big part of my existence I haven't felt that way." "I don't know if that's true," Hilary added, "but that's how it feels." The 38-year-old, who shares son Luca, 13, with ex-husband Mike Comrie, as well as Banks, 7, May 4, and Townes, 22 months, with husband Matthew Koma, opened up about her particularly strained relationship with her father following her parents' divorce in 2008, admitting that efforts to fix things have not been fruitful. "My dad and I don't really have much of a relationship and we don't talk very often," he explained. "I think it's really difficult if a family breaks up very dramatically. Sometimes it's hard to find your way back: some people want to and some people don't." Hilary has also had a challenging dynamic with her sister Haylie Duff in recent years, and their estrangement inspired another new song, "We Don't Talk." In fact, the former Disney Channel star noted that his fractured sibling bond was more common than he initially thought. "In my adulthood, I've encountered more and more people who are going through this experience," Hilary explained on the podcast. "And as painful as it is to share, when I decided to make this record, I could only talk about the things I've been through. There would be no purpose to making a record after 10 years [other than] facing what has been. So that's my truth."
