Hilary Duff Opens Up About ‘Horrible’ Divorce, Losing Her ‘Innocence’ on Disney & Family Friction: ‘My Sister & I Don’t Speak’

Hilary Duff Talks 'Horrible' Divorce and Losing Her 'Innocence' at Disney and Family Friction: 'My Sister and I Don't Talk' Hilary Duff bared her soul on her new album Luck... or Something, and in a new interview, the singer and actress opened up about the key moments in her life, from her divorce to her struggles with family and the Disney Channel machine, that led up to it. In a new episode of On Purpose With Jay Shetty released Monday (March 9), Duff reflected on some of the biggest personal consequences she's faced, starting with her 2014 split from ex-husband Mike Comrie. “I felt like at that point in my life I was so ready to get married… I was ready to have a baby,” she told Shetty. “I was ready to have something of my own, you know, that I could like and focus on and have it be mine. More from Billboard “I've been pretty open about, you know, being a divorced person and what that means, and being a single mother,” she continued. “Deciding to end a family is a huge and horrible choice. But I am also co-parenting... with that person. And overall we do a great job.” The Lizzie McGuire alum married the former NHL star in 2010, staying together for four years and welcoming their son Luca before splitting. Their divorce was finalized in 2016 and Duff is now married to songwriter Matthew Koma, with whom she has welcomed three more children over the years. Another separation that affected Hilary was between her parents, Robert and Susan, who divorced in 2008. She has been open about having “complicated” dynamics with her mom and dad, as well as her older sister, Haylie, both of whom she talked about on the podcast. “Being in a family where your parents are not together and you don't have relationships with both parents is devastating,” she told Shetty. “You want your parents to feel like they care about you. And much of my existence hasn't felt like that. “I don’t know if that’s true, but that’s how it feels.” "My sister and I don't talk," Hilary added about her breakup with Haylie, which inspired "We Don't Talk," one of the former's new songs on Luck... or Something. “It's very difficult to be a person whose life has been exposed in the industry for 25 years, and we were talking about, you know, tiptoeing around before about what the outcome of some of that has been... It's a very vulnerable song and it's a very raw part of my existence. I hope it's not forever, but it's for now." Beyond the prying eyes on her family and personal life, the How I Met Your Father star also explained more ways in which finding fame through her work with Disney as a preteen had negative impacts on her. "Probably around 15 was when I felt like the world started taking a lot of interest in what I wore, who I dated, what I ate... I feel like I lost some serious innocence," she told Shetty. For a brief time, Hilary says the scrutiny led to poor body image and eating disorders. “I was dealing with people commenting on my body at a young age and starting to get photographed and people asking me how many times you weigh yourself or comparing you to people who were skinnier than you or other girls in your line of work,” she said. “I definitely struggled for a while there, just trying to fit into a certain mold and have control over something in my life. Fortunately that didn't last long. Um, but I definitely played with it.” Luck... or Something was released on February 20, debuting at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. In June, he will begin a world tour in support of the LP, marking his first in over a decade.
